(After trying several other ways of sharing my adventures, I decided to resurrect this old blog. Hopefully it will be a good place to store these memories so friends and family can see them.)
Nov 3-17 2022 I embarked on the trip of a lifetime, to Kenya! This was my first international trip ever. And my first time leaving my family that long. Several people have asked me why Kenya. I’m still discovering the answer to that question. I have followed 100 Humanitarians international for many years, and donated and volunteered sometimes in projects here in the US, with things like sew a thons (making hopesac thermal cookers and feminine hygiene supplies) and fundraisers. I thought maybe when my kids were grown I might consider going on an expedition, but I had a lot of other destinations on my list ahead of Kenya (mostly European ones). I got my passport a little over a year ago, which I had applied for in hopes of a romantic Italy vacation for our 25th anniversary. While I was waiting for it to process, my youngest son Ammon’s diabetes diagnosis came and we don’t know exactly when we will be able to go away together, due to him needing such specialized care. So our Italy trip didn’t happen. But it was fortunate that I had my passport already, because when I heard about this November expedition, I had the strongest feeling I needed to be on that trip. And there would never have been time to get a passport in time at that point. It was totally a God nudge, that I needed to go. I was honestly a little terrified to take the trip, but also excited, because I know from experience that when that feeling comes, and I follow it, something amazing always comes into my life. Mike was nervous too, but after praying about it with me, and receiving an undeniable answer, I secured the last spot on the expedition. People say I was brave to go, but I think he was the most brave one, since he took care of all the kids needs while working throughout from home, and during that time the kids had play performances, hair and makeup, he ended up hosting our son’s birthday party with 7 other 7 year old kids, and on top of that they all got sick before I left. Everyone lived though, and they enjoyed having Dad in charge.
P.S. I did get a little taste of the European vacation I dreamed of too, since we had a 13 hour layover in Paris! We took a bus tour and saw many of the famous landmarks. So fun! I still want to take Mike with me to Europe though.
