Painting the roses red...and the doors green

My dear 3 yr old asked me today if he could help paint (we have been painting our nearly-finished basement rooms) and I told him no, not today. I let him help the other day when we were doing all the walls and the trim wasn't on, but now there is only touchup work to do and painting the doors white. Since I woke up with a huge headache this morning I decided to sleep in rather than do my reading and study that I usually do in the mornings, so when the little ones were playing nicely for a change, and the baby wasn't velcroed to my legs, I decided to make a run for it to my room and read a little. Big mistake. Just as the thought came to me that I might need to check on the kids, Jacob comes running up the stairs yelling that Ethan was painting the doors green and that Alaina was helping him! I run downstairs and find the doors, which I had just painted white, the floor (which thankfully doesn't have our new carpet on it yet), 3 paintbrushes, and their faces and clothes all covered in green paint. Alaina had it in her mouth as well, so I got to call poison control for the 2nd time in 3 weeks. (the first time was when she ate deoderant.) Luckily, they said it would be ok, just to give her water and wait for a messy diaper in a lovely shade of Athenian Green. I'm not sure how they got the paint cans open. I called Mike and shared the events of the day, and he, not being here to have to clean up, thought it was rather funny. He tried to help me see the humor and be grateful that they didn't paint anything else, and that the carpet hadn't come yet. I'm not quite laughing yet. But I guess it will be funny later...
