Scouting, Spelling bees, and Sprinkler fun

While much of our time is taken up cleaning to keep the house ready to show, we have been trying to plan in some fun things to help us pass the time while Daddy is gone and to keep us sane. We got to go to the annual Scout Expo, and we all had a good time. We only lost a few kids, a few times, but all were found before it was over so no harm done, right? It is hard keeping track of 5 kids in a crowded, big place like that. They had some really creative booths the scouts had come up with. The favorite of everyone was the zipline, which everyone but Alaina experienced. I couldn't believe they would let Ethan on it, he was barely big enough to get up the ladder by himself, but he wanted to and they let him, and when he got done he said it was the most 'awesomest ride ever!' He is quite a little daredevil. He decides he is going to do something and nothing will stop him, least of all fear. Which is probably why the other day I found him trying to light the gas stove with a pot of water on top of it to make macaroni when I was taking too long to make lunch (in his opinion). And why he took off from the neighbor's house he was playing at, because he wanted to go for a walk and we hadn't picked him up yet to go. Luckily one of our ward members found him and brought him back before he got too far. That kid is a little too independent. Anyway, back to the expo...

The kids also enjoyed the star wars booth where you could fight 'darth vader' and 'obi wan' with lightsabers. Jeremy also enjoyed trying out a motorcycle at the BACA booth. The marble minigolf made of boxes and papertowel rolls etc. was very creative, and the kids spent a lot of time there. They also did catapults, archery, and an obstacle course. They had a handicap awareness booth where the kids had to frost a cookie blindfolded (to get a feel for blindness) and navigate a wheelchair up a ramp, through a doorway, and turn around. They liked that and said it was harder than they thought. A few also watched the police dog demo, but Alaina thought it was scary so we didn't stay for all of it. All in all it was a good day together and not as overwhelming as I thought it would be taking them there alone.

We also got to participate in the yearly homeschool spelling bee. I was surprised when Jeremy said he wanted to do it, 3 days before it was happening, but he studied and he went up there confidently and spelled his way through several more rounds than we expected! They were all excited to get their ice cream coupons and go out for ice cream afterward.

We have been working on our front yard a lot to try to make it look nicer, weeding and planting flowers, and they have enjoyed that too, especially the playing in the sprinklers. I think we will be doing a lot of that when we get to Texas, since they are a lot hotter than we are!

I don't know how you do it with all five and Mike being gone. You are amazing. Your kids must be fairly obedient. Mine take off so quick and think it's funny to hide from me. I would have been a nervous wreck at the Expo. Good luck with selling your house. I hope it all goes smoothly.

The kids have been good, but nervous wreck has described me over 50% of the time he has been gone, haha. Luckily that day I was feeling a little more relaxed and tried to remember that most of the hundreds of people around us were scouts or scout leaders who are a pretty trustworthy group, and they would probably be safe. I think I have developed a small ulcer though just from the stress of the last 2 months. I jump at every sound at night and I don't think I have ever cried so often or so easily. I don't want to do this again, but I have learned a few things about being independent and ways I would like to improve on that. We will be moving the end of June whether or not the house is sold so I have one more month to go. I think I can, I think I can....
